Automatic deactivation of a previous version of a build after rejecting the current version

On Sunday morning, I finally went outside after spending a week supporting the launch of our new game, Wasteland Lords: Fury Ride. The last thing I did before heading out for a walk with friends was upload the latest version of the game late Saturday night. It was approved in two hours and automatically became the main version for all players.

Suddenly, I received a notification that the main version was rejected because of a problem with the promotional image (after about 12 hours online). I quickly logged into the Creator Portal from my iPhone and saw that the previous version was back online, so players could still play the game.

Thinking the issue might be with the IARC rating, I created a new release, updated the rating, and submitted it for review. Then, I logged out of the Creator Portal. However, the game went offline for two hours because there were no active releases.

In my panic, I might have accidentally turned off the game myself while navigating the small screen of my phone, but I don’t remember doing that.

Finally, after two hours, I discovered the issue and activated one of the previous versions. Fortunately, the game returned to Discover in nearly the same position as before.

Questions for Epic Games:

  1. Why was an approved version of the game suddenly turned off? This was a complete surprise to me. I could have monitored and fixed the issue if I was near my PC in minutes, but I was outdoors, an hour away from my workstation.

  2. Is there a flaw in the version-changing algorithm? Here’s what happened:

  • Version 8 was my main version.
  • Version 7 was rejected.
  • Version 6 was canceled by me.
  • Version 5 was the version I activated after discovering the game was down.

Could the algorithm be unable to find the last eligible active version?
